A couple of years ago, my daughter had one of those, once in a lifetime teachers – dedicated, caring and compassionate without being overbearing, focussed and best of all, she knew exactly how much push and pull was needed for each child to get them to really reach higher and reach for more. Within that one year of school, most of the class had advanced at least 2-3 grades worth of learning.
And just how did she do this? It was an amazement to watch, but she used a mind-boggling array of awards and rewards, working to a system that had the children raring to go and desiring to accomplish more. Not just were certificates and cuddly trophies in store, but in this all-girls school, where cute, one of a kind stationery was highly coveted, she knew exactly how to bribe them.
It was so easy to want to help her in any way that we could, but short of the usual gift cards and home baked goods, she rarely ever shared what she needed, now, if she had an Amazon Education wish-list…
