10 Steps on How to Deal with Back to School Blues
Summer vacation allows you to delve into a leisurely routine. There is no fixed time to wake up in the morning, you can have pizzas or pastas for breakfast, and movie nights and slumber parties happen every other night. When school opens, and kids have to bid farewell to their laid-back lifestyle, it can be a little hard on parents and children alike. Parents face tantrums, whines, and unreasonable demands of their kids.
Little ones want to stay past their bedtime, they don’t want to rise early and getting ready for school is a nightmare. Homework time is similarly painful, and you have to brave another couple of hours of screaming rounds, battles, and frustrated tears. It can take a few weeks to get back into a normal school routine.
Having a difficult time dealing with a child with back to school blues? Here is how you can fix it: Share on XIf you are having a difficult time dealing with a child with back to school blues, here are some ideas on how you can fix it:
1. Fix the Routine Before School Starts
You must think I am crazy. Why would I stop my child from having fun when school hasn’t even started? When a doctor has to stop your medicine, he doesn’t ask you to stop taking it immediately. To prepare your body, the dosage is tapered off in a gradual manner. In a similar way, you need to prepare your child mentally and physically for school.
Bring your child’s routine back to normal at least a week before school starts. The first step is to send them off to bed early. It will ease the shock of waking up in the morning and getting ready for school. Next you can practice some lessons and go through new course books. That will prepare a child on what to expect in upcoming classes. Following a school routine during the last days of holidays will make the first day of school easy for both of you.

The smell of new books, glossy stationery, a brand-new backpack, an ultra-cool pencil case and of course, some amazing back-to-school outfits… School supplies make the idea of going back to school a bit bearable. When your kid is given a grueling task of solving mathematics sums, writing on a crisp page of a notebook with a sharpened pencil will make it much easier.
Before school begins, take your child on a ‘special’ trip to buy supplies. Let them browse the bookstore, allow them to choose a reasonable amount of stationery and buy them a backpack of their choice. It will get them excited about the new session and they will wait for it start to flaunt their awesome purchases.

Rekindling old friendships is one of the best ways to get your child eager for school to start back up. It may be a long time since your little ones have met their best friends. The slumber party that you organized three weeks back seem like ages ago and phone calls just don’t do it. There is a high chance your kids miss their batch-mates.
On the last few days of vacations, reunite your children with their long-lost friends. They will happily discuss what they did during the summer and they may even make plans for lunch break gleefully. Rekindling with their kindred spirits reduces the anxiety a child usually has on the first day. Having a friend is reassuring and they will be keen to go back.
4. Find Out What’s Bothering Them
Sometimes there is a reason behind a child’s anxiety that they are afraid to share with their parents. When a kid is being bullied at school or if they are lacking academically, they tend to lose interest in school. Vacations become a sanctuary where they feel safe and secure.
If you feel your child’s behavior is off and they are worried about something, talk through their anxieties. It will not only take the load off their chest, you will be able to help them tackle the issue that has been bothering them.

Vacations can turn into a lazy, couch potato. If your child is fond of TV, internet, and video games, don’t let him get hooked on them. Instead, ensure that children have a healthy and active routine throughout the summer. Enroll them in swimming classes and encourage them to cycle and take walks in parks. When they go back to school, they will be full of endorphins and will be able to easily beat the lethargy.
