A word of warning
If you decide to get a laptop stand, remember to only seat the laptop on the stand when it is fully deployed to your preferred height. If you need to readjust, remove the laptop first. It may take a few trials to get it right as we found therefore it is safer to put your laptop on a flat surface while you fiddle with the stand.
From our experience, given how rigid the joints are on these stands, there is risk flipping the stand over and dropping your laptop. Be sure to get the right position, secure the hinges and joints before you place the laptop on the stand. Minor adjustment will be alright but if you need to raise or tilt the platform, you need your other hand on the base to hold it down.

The arm is a little skinny for our liking but it still claims to support up to 13lbs which is more than even your heaviest laptop. Speaking of laptops, Besign is more reserved with this in that it only supports up to 14-inch laptops so will fit a MacBook Pro 14. Heat dissipation is sufficient and the space saving design with its flat base offers storage space under the stand enough for a small keyboard. It won’t however support typing on the laptop, just to raise the display and use with a separate bluetooth keyboard as it wobbles and bounce. As a stand, it will pass with flying colours.

Although, we wouldn’t know why you would stack a bunch of laptops on a stand.
Overall, this is a solid frame of a stand with a base that comes with raised edges to keep things pencil or pen from rolling off. Apple Pencil is prone to roll off the desks. Finally, the big voids in the middle of the platform gives you plenty of airflow underneath the laptop. Our only wish is for two more soft silicone pads on the far corners to even out the two in front.

How we test a laptop stand
The key to a good laptop stand is stability. If you can deploy it, seat a laptop and set it to the height that suits you, all without it wobbling then it is a good laptop stand. But we do more than that. Here is a list of tests that we used to effectively test the laptop stands.
1. Ease of setup test
We evaluate how easy it is to deploy the laptop stand, There will be those that are more fiddly than others to setup. We judge the stand from the perspective of an end user. How long and easy will it take to assemble if any and to get it out of the box and ready for use.
2. Stability test
We ensure that the laptop stand provides a stable and secure platform for the laptop. Placing the laptop on the stand to check if it wobbles or feels unsteady. We then perform our typing test and drive the user interface with the touchpad. Both actions ought to give you confidence, that the stand is stable enough for a user’s typical use. Bottom line is, it needs to remain stable throughout.
3. Adjustability test
We test the stand for adjustability, tilt angle for the platform as well as rotation of the hinges. We measure the adjustable height and angle settings offered. On every setting, we test it with a laptop to check that it is stable and will support the weight without collapsing. We also test it for the average user so see if the height it offers will be sufficient to help with theee if it can accommodate your preferred ergonomic position. Ultimately, we check if the adjustments are easy to make and if the stand holds its position securely and how to tighten the hinges and joints if it does become lose.
4. Ergonomics
Once we are confident with how to work the stand and its adjustable settings (height, tilt and/or swivel), we evaluate the ergonomic design of the laptop stand. We look for designs that will improve the usable height, viewing angle, typing comfort with tilt and how that contributes to a person’s personal comfort and posture. This includes ensuring that once the setup is configured for a user, he or she does not suffer from stain on the shoulders, arms, wrists and neck.
5. Weight test
Our tests includes to determine the weight capacity of the laptop stand as claimed by the manufacturer and compare it to the weight of your laptop. We use the biggest laptop we can get our hands on that the manufacturer claims that the stand will accommodate and test this. We place the laptop on the stand and ensure it can support the weight without bending or straining. This will give our readers peace of mind if the stand pass our weight test.
6. Ventilation test
We check the available vents on the platform to allow air flow for the laptop. There is a balance between rigidity and stability versus using holes on the platform. Laptops with air intake at the bottom of the case and vents on the sides or below the display needs to be allowed to ‘breath’. The stand need to allow for extended and intensive use of the laptop, while keeping the unit cool to avoid overheating. Our tests include monitoring the temperature of the system internally and externally and check that no vents are blocked.
7. Compatibility
If a stand is designed specifically for a laptop we check that the cable conduit or size is compatible. We test the stand with laptops of varying sizes to ensure it can accommodate different dimensions as claimed. That the soft silicon pads are spaced out appropriately to support the laptop on all corners or sides.
8. Durability test
We assess the build quality and materials used in the laptop stand, examine its construction, joints, hinges and connections for sturdiness and durability. We look for any signs of weakness or poor craftsmanship that might affect the stand’s long-term use.
These are tests for desk bound laptop stand. Ones featured above. Should you wish to test a portable unit, here is what we would look for.
9. Portability test
We assess its portability features, how easy it is to assemble and disassemble. Most of these would have fold out platform and scissor joints to expand sideways. We check for how easy it is to put it together to deploy it at a height ready for use and to them fold and put it away. We also measure the weight and size of the unit once folded to check if it is easy to pack away be it, to ensure that it fits in the average backpack or laptop case easily.
