BrainPOP Featured Movie
A little nostalgic when writing a review for an app that I personally installed on my iPad 1 so my little girl can learn a thing or two from it.
BrainPOP Featured Movie
My second encounter with BrainPOP moves beyond the screen into the real world when a real size Moby was parading among eager visitors at the BETT Show (British Educational Training and Technology Show) in London a few years ago.
While there were only a handful of animated videos on the free version before it starts asking you to go on a subscription or fee-based service, there were a few favourites. My little girl (not so little anymore) laughed every time Moby threw a pack of cigarettes on the floor and started jumping on it in a video about the dangers of smoking. I don’t think she actually realized at that time what a cigarette even looks like (we live in a smoke free home).
Fast forward to now, we see BrainPOP Featured Movie app for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch as a great app to break down facts or difficult to understand concepts be it in Science, Social Studies, English, Maths, Art & Music, Health or Engineering and Technology.
It truly is a great way for little children to learn. Instead of watching the programmes on TV of which you have no control over, why not something that you are sure will be educational and of value. Children can watch a different animated movie every day, then then test their new knowledge with an interactive quiz even with the Free version.
To get the most of the app, you will need the optional in-app subscription which allows your child to explore even more content, choose to watch and learn as well as interact with targeted quizzes. As a bonus, all movies are close captioned, so it’s easy for them to read along to improve their reading skill in the process.
So what do you get with the optional in-app subscription? The BrainPOP Explorer Subscription lets you in on the free Featured Movie and its quiz plus four additional related movies and quizzes, rotating every day for a small sum of $1.99 per month.
You have the option of going the for the premium package, the BrainPOP Full Access Subscription where you will get the free Featured Movie and its quiz plus unlimited access to all of BrainPOP’s 750+ movies and quizzes for $6.99 per month
Even without the paid content, the app does have some good content, the free Featured Movie have been downloaded millions of times and received plenty of good accolades from education writers, parents, teachers, and children
We love how simple the animated characters look especially the main characters; Moby (the robot), Tim and Annie and how it is executed with original voice and graphics to cover an extensive selection of educational topics. This goes to show that you don’t need all that technology to get in the way of learning, just some honest 2D animated (or hardly animated) on a screen to do the job.
Macworld, Family Circle, USA Today, iPhone Life, and Common Sense Media recommended the app. We thoroughly recommend the app and if you haven’t tried it, download it now and let your child lose on it. With the free Featured Movie, you have nothing to lose.
